from the blizzard getting even higher overnight. if you're traveling east today, this will affect you. al's going to have the updated forecast straight ahead. >> but on this friday morning we want to start with details in the california manhunt for a los angeles police officer. former los angeles police officer who's now accused of three murders. we have two reports starting with nbc's miguel almaguer, good morning to you. >> reporter: matt, good morning. lapd headquarters remains a target so today it is a fortress with the entrance and exits heavily guarded. this as officers all across the state try to hunt down a man who used to wear a badge. overnight, police teams scour big bear mountain, three hours outside of los angeles. this is where police discovered christopher corner's burnt out truck. the 33-year-old at the center of a massive manhunt. >> we don't know what he's going to do. we don't -- we know what he's capable of doing and we need to find him. >> reporter: heavily armed and

extremely dangerous, police say corner, a former lapd officer, navy reservist and sharp shooter, has already killed three and is targeting many more. >> of course he knows what he's doing. we trained him. >> reporter: four years ago corner accused a fellow officer of kicking a suspect in the head, but it was corner who was fired for making false statements in the case. detectives say dorner is targeting officers he names in this manifesto published on-line. you will now live the life of the prey. i never had the opportunity to have a family of my own. i'm term mating yours. -- terminating yours. police say the revenge killings began sunday when monica kwan and keith lawrence were shot to death. kwan's father was the former police captain who represented co dorner in his disciplinary hearing. >> nobody else needs to die. >> reporter: wednesday detectives say he tried to steal a boat near san diego, a badge, his i.d.

and wallet found in the area. thursday morning at 1:25 a.m., two lapd officers assigned to protect a person in the manifesto came under fire. one officer grazed in the head. >> officer shot multiple sometimes. >> reporter: a short time later a gunman opened fire on two riverside police officers. one killed, the other critical. >> our officers were stopped at an intersection at a red light when they were ambushed. >> reporter: with nerves rattled police opened fire on a truck thought to be dorner's. two women delivering newspapers were shot and injured. late thursday, police discovered dorner's burnt out truck on big bear mountain. s.w.a.t. teams cleared cabins but no sign of the suspect. today, police still hunting an alleged cop killer who used to be one of their own. >> in the mountains outside of los angeles where dorner's vehicle was discovered police say they also found footprints, but they say that does not mean

that the suspect is in that area. in fact, that's one reason why all of southern california remains on edge. they say the suspect could be anywhere. >> all right. miguel, thank you. we want to get more on that manifesto now, warning of the attacks. nbc's diana al va yar is live with that part of the story. good morning. >> good morning. in this rambling manifesto posted to dorner's facebook page he details everything, from the reasons he believes he was terminated to his claims of corruption in the police force. even shoutouts to celebrities and journalists and warnings, quote, you have awoken a sleeping giant. >> reporter: how did christopher jordan dorner, a former police officer, navy veteran and college football player, become the most wanted man in california? in the manifesto that appeared on dorner's facebook page with the heading "last resort" the former lapd officer blames the department for his actions. i've lost everything because the lapd took my name and knew i was innocent.

dorner claims he was fired as retaliation for reporting his trainer officer kicked this man, christopher getler, while in custody. he says he wants his name cleared. >> it is not going to happen. >> reporter: dorner details other incidents in which he claims officers uttered racist remarks and laughed about crime photos, all kept secret by a police code of silence. the enemy combatants in l.a. are not the citizens and suspects. it's the police officers. dorner named several members of law enforcement, calling them, quote, high value targets. i never had the opportunity to have a family of my own. i'm terminating yours. police say he has already carried out that threat by murdering monica kwan, the daughter of former lapd captain and attorney randall kwan, who represented dorner at the time of his dismissal. the attacks will stop when the department states the truth about my innocence. publicly he writes. but dorner also thanked several colleagues and friends for their support. among them, a stunned melinda

yates, who met dorner in his college football days. >> i mean he is who i know of him as an amazing person, somebody that i would trust with my life. so it just -- it's crazy. >> reporter: justin went to naval officer candidate school with dorner. >> he was nice, positive, upbeat. always had a smile on his face. never heard him say a bad thing about anyone. >> reporter: dorner peppers his rants with random observations on celebrities and politics, defending president obama and complimenting michele obama's hair. he always comes back to the lapd demanding what he calls justice. unfortunately, i will not be alive to see my name cleared. that's what this is about, my name. a man is nothing without his name. police say they've ordered a protection detail for more than 40 people named in the manifesto which is chilling and surreal.

beyond the lapd and politics he declares his admiration for celebrities and public figures. >> diana in los angeles, thank you. another big story we're following this morning, the start of what could be a record-setting blizzard here in the northeast. >> it's been an interesting morning already. we're seeing a wintry mix here in new york city as we take a live look at our plaza. in a few hours, it's going to turn to all snow. the winds will be howling, travel nearly impossible. we're covering the storm from all angles this morning. let's start with al roker, he is in boston. that is the city, boston, expecting to get slammed, al? >> absolutely, matt. they've closed the schools today. amtrak canceling trains after the 1:00 train between new york and boston. the airports as we said closed. not closed but no flights. flights have been canceled. this is going to be the case up and down the northeast coast. here's what we've got. we've got two systems, a clipper coming across the great lakes, low pressure making its way up the east coast. and you can see the moisture

from that system along the coast, the cold air being dragged in from the clipper. they will combine eventually later this morning into this afternoon. as we see the clipper transfer its energy over to the east coast system, that will draw in the cold air behind it, bringing up the moisture from the atlantic and that is a potent mix and that's why we right now have winter storm warnings in effect from michigan all the way to the northeast. but from new york to portland, maine, and north of there, we are looking for blizzard warnings. we have a blizzard warning up for sustained winds, 35 miles per hour, greater drifting snow, low visibilities. look at these snowfall amounts. new york city, basically talking about from nine inches to a foot. to the west of there, it's going to be about six to eight inches. but really along the coast, the northeast coast, we're talking about one to two feet of snow.

but in closer boston and to the west, anywhere from two feet and we can't rule out up to 36 inches of snow. and with blowing winds, strong winds, low visibility, there will be a lot of drifting and we have coastal flood watches in effect as well as winds will be gusting over 75 miles per hour along the new england coast. so this is going to be a brutal storm affecting at least 55 million people over the next 48 hours. matt, savannah? >> 75 miles an hour is no joke. >> no kidding. we'll check in with al again. the snow is picking up right now in providence, rhode island. ron mot is there, good morning. >> hey, savannah, good morning to you. right now we're seeing just snow flurries but this afternoon we're expecting the snow to come down by the bucket loads and at that time it's going to be too late to start getting ready but here in new england, they like to think they're always ready for storms like this. across new england, it's time to pay up. a rush to fortify and hunker down on the homefront after last

year's unusually quiet winter. the classic nor'easter has returned with a vengeance. >> salt, several. >> reporter: and millions will need all that and more forecasters say from hartford to points north, south, east and west. they stocked up in new york city. >> i'm preparing now for the snow with the ice. >> not messing around. >> not messing around at all. >> reporter: connecticut. >> some milk and other odds and ends that i need for the weekend. just in case i can't get out to the store. >> reporter: around philadelphia. >> ice melt, rock, salt, you know, calcium chloride, snow shovels, no sleds yet. >> reporter: and boston, where a run on snow blowers, emptied one store, leaving the mayor to warn, fill up on common sense too. >> we are used to these types of storms, but also want to remind everyone to use common sense, stay off the streets of our city. >> reporter: at noon, a parking ban goes into effect in boston

and the governor has ordered nonemergency state employees to work from home. those trying to get out of dodge by air, may be grounded a while as thousands of flights have been canceled throughout the region. >> we normally handle about 100,000 per day. we think that there will be close to that number affected in the 24-hour period. >> reporter: not since the blizzard of '78, a deadly dumping of as much as three feet of snow has new england braced this hard for a storm to rival that one. >> i just felt the spirit of hysteria come over me. >> reporter: among the items people are really pressed to have on hand at home, batteries and flashlights, not so much candles because if there are widespread power outages as feared the last thing officials want to see are widespread fires. matt, savannah? ron in providence, thanks very much. if you have a flight booked to the east coast or tomorrow, probably shouldn't bet on it. thousands of flights into and out of this region are already being canceled. nbc's erica hill is at laguardia

airport here in new york. erica, good morning to you. >> hey, matt. good morning to you. at last check just over 2800 flights had been canceled, about two-thirds of those involved this new york area which, of course, has three major airports, you add in boston and you are looking at major cancellations. here's the good news, most carriers are allowing you to change or rebook that flight without a charge. probably going to want to do that on the website. they say a lot of their call centers are overloaded. you can do that on-line. the situation has changed since we first got here this morning. a little bottleneck at security this morning, we're told everybody was for the most part calm and patient. a lot of people checking in early trying to get on an earlier flight and may have been a smart move, because the boards as we look at them have turned yellow. most of the flights are either canceled or being delayed. if we look at a map of the flights in the air at this hour around the new york, new jersey, massachusetts area, you'll notice i think we have that map for you, all of the planes that

are actually in orange are the ones that could be delayed. even if your flight is not canceled you are looking at delay. as for tomorrow, flights canceled. we're learning that most domestic carriers in this area expect to close their operations at airports between 2:00 and 5:00 p.m. today. i spoke to folks at laguardia who said they were hearing could be closer to 1:00 p.m. so keep that in mind. the good news is that many of them are hoping to resume operations tomorrow, some time after noon, and saturday tends to be the lightest day for air travel which will hopefully allow them to get back on track a little bit. on sunday we're only seeing about a handful of flights canceled at this point. keep that in mind. go to the internet, check your flights before you go anywhere and don't forget twitter can be a great tool in these circumstances. back to you. >> erica hill at laguardia, thank you very much. >> we're going to keep our eye on this storm throughout the morning. let's check in with natalie morales at the news desk with the other top stories we're following. good morning to you. >> good morning. >> good morning, everyone. we got word moments ago a united

airlines flight from london to los angeles has been forced to emergency land in ireland with 182 people on board. pilots on the boeing 777 reported smoke in the cockpit this morning. the plane is being inspected to see if it can resume its flight. this as boeing is facing scrutiny over ongoing troubles withes its 787 dreamliner. officials are investigating after a hacker was able to expose photographs and conversations found in the bush family's e-mail accounts. nbc's justice correspondent pete williams has the latest now from washington, d.c. good morning, pete. >> natalie, a spokesman for former president george h.w. bush confirms an investigation has been under way into what appears to be a hacker's intrusion into the e-mail accounts of at least half a dozen people. among the material intercepted, messages from and to both former presidents obtained apparently getting access to the accounts of three bush family members and two friends of the former presidents.

the hacker claims to have obtained a list of family addresses, phone numbers and e-mail addresses, including some of those belonging to both the former presidents along with family pictures. the material intercepted dates from 2009 through last year and the secret service says it's on the trail of the hacker. e-mail is one of the least secure ways to communicate and it is a very common target of hackers, natalie. >> good reminder for all of us as well. pete williams in washington, thanks. tough questions for cia director nominee john brennan. nbc's capital hill correspondent kelly o'donnell has more. good morning, kelly. >> good morning, natalie. some of the country's deepest secrets were at the heart of two intense hearings where top officials were grilled about intelligence, the benghazi attacks and drone strikes and that attracted protesters. # >> pakistan, somalia. and who else? >> reporter: anger over targeted killings. >> please remove -- >> reporter: and senators who say the cia and white house won't give them answers. >> the committee is just stonewalled.

weather down through the gulf coast. we expect to see severe weather developing over the next 24 hours through central texas and making its way tomorrow on into the gulf coast. look for a lot of snow out through the rockies, plenty of sunshine through the central plains. temperatures are on the cool side through the southwest into southern california. chillier than usual. we also look for still leftover snow from michigan on into ohio. some parts of michigan, yes, in the last 24 hours, northern michigan, picking up 15 inches of snow, snarling traffic and bringing down power lines and we expect also to see plenty of sunshine through the southeast. we're going to have your local forecast in just a little bit, but first, this message.

into this mansion in a well-to-do neighborhood without buying or renting it is gone. andre barbosa, south florida's most infamous squatter, is squatting no more. >> very complex situation. >> reporter: it was good while it lasted for barbosa. since christmas, the 23-year-old has been living in this 7,500 square foot foreclosed, $2.5 million waterside mansion in boca raton, florida. while he was living the dream, foest posting his thoughts about living in the mansion, neighbors were living a nightmare. >> he's a squatter. that can pull a neighborhood down faster than anything. >> reporter: attorneys, police, and bankers from bank of america, which owned the property, swooped in. >> after extensive legal research we determined there was a basis to conduct an investigation. that's all we needed. >> reporter: that investigation found there was reason to believe that barbosa was trespassing. even though he wasn't there at

the time, locks were changed, possessions inside the house were removed and he was formally evicted. neighbors were thrilled. >> yes, i'm very relieved. very much. now -- i don't think he'll come back. >> reporter: using an obscure real estate law called adverse possession. when a neighbor came suspicious and went over, he found several people inside and asked one what was going on. >> he said i'm here to assess this building, to establish -- i said what? >> he said, yeah, embassy for our mission. >> reporter: when two people show showed up, covering up the license plate for their car, neighbors had enough. they're just happy everyone is gone. >> i'm old school. it's not moral or ethical what they're doing. they're taking advantage of the system. that's not the way i was brought up. that's not the way people in this neighborhood are brought up. >> reporter: bank of america

it was hurricane sandy that really pointed out the difference between the european and american models. al roker saw a full week before the storm hit the european model was predicting a devastating blow to new york and new jersey. >> the european model keeps it hugging the coast and by early tuesday morning, it's inland in the northeast. >> reporter: four days before landfall, the u.s. model finally agreed with the european model. now, a crippling blizzard predicted for new england. >> easily boston, a foot will be on the low end of your accumulation. >> reporter: and, again, the european model was three days ahead of the u.s. in predicting this storm's path. >> we've got a developing clipper over the plains, a lot of wet weather through the gulf. these two systems will phase together or merge. the european model forms this storm closer to shore. >> reporter: the new director of the national weather service is well aware. >> we have a very good numerical

model, but there are modeling systems in the world that are considered better than ours. >> reporter: why is the european system more accurate? experts say because it is constantly slicing the world's atmosphere into very small grids, then analyzing data like temperature readings, pressure, sbhumtd wind changes and the european super computer is far more powerful, running 100 forecasting models a day, compared to 84 on the u.s. computer. there a . >> there are two parts to the modeling process, running the ooh equations and slicing the atmosphere. the second is taking all the data around the world and putting it into the model to start off in the first place. >> reporter: the u.s. is upgrading its computer system in the fall. even then it still won't be as powerful as the european system. now the good news is that the u.s., europe, canada and the uk, we all share all of this data. we're all benefiting from each other's data and satellite

shows they can stay happy over a long period of time. >> we want to look at people extremely happy, what's their normal, and how should we emulate it. >> the first question is a doosy. how often do you have sex in your survey? 7.5% said daily. 3 to 4 times a week was 40%, 27% said a handful of times. what is the normal for a happy couple? >> three to four times a week, but what we also looked at was not just going through the actions but the quality of that. there's a big difference between being in a relationship where you're happy, you're okay, you're having sex, it's all good. then when you're extremely happy, having sex that many times, it's a totally different ballpark and that's what we really like. >> we looked at a lot of affectionate behaviors and how that correlated. these people called each other pet names, they cuddled, they

held hands. >> if you're sitting at home right now and couples are watching and saying, we do not have sex three to four times a week, one of the suggestions you have for people to try to increase the frequency of sex is sleep in the nude more often. what did your survey tell you about that? >> not enough people were doing it. >> we had 28, 30% of the people that said they were sleeping in the nude. but then when you look at the happiest couples, they were really sleeping in the nude. they knew what they were doing. >> and women say yes -- can we put that graphic back up? we just had a graphic up that said the women say yes, they sleep in the nude 34% of the time, men say yes 38% of the time. >> we asked our viewers this morning. 76% of our viewers do not sleep in the nude, 24% do, but apparently this makes a difference, i guess for obvious reasons. >>he happy couples are. 76% of the happy couples sleep in the nude. >> you also asked people, by the way, about the use of

pornography in their relationship. why did you decide to go there? >> well, we think it's been sort of villainized, like someone watching it think something is wrong with them, but in fact people who do that does not have a negative effect in their relationship. we're not talking about being addicted to it, we're talking about joint users or individually. >> let's talk about trust in the relationship. this is key. you asked, do you trust your partner? 39% of women said they did compared with 53% of men. that's an interesting difference. the liying difference also very interesting. 71% of women said they lie and 75% of men said they lie to their partner at times. >> we want to dive into that question a little bit more. 50% of men said they lie about where they go sometimes, and women do it, too. >> what do you make of that gender difference when it's men more trusting of their wives and vice versa. >> we have a lot of data saying

maybe women should be a little extra cautious. we don't have time to go into it, but there are things going on in people's minds. for example, i was very surprised at how many happy people thought of breaking up. i mean, i think there is a lot going on sometimes that people are sensing. >> is that about fantasy or is that just about not being happy with your lot in life? >> i think you're just re-evaluating all the time. even the happy couples think about it. there's things i think people haven't gotten out in the open and that changes the trust issue. women a men are more trusting than women. >> have you read your partner's e-mails without them knowing it, obviously. 54% of women said yes, they have, 49% of men said they have. was that a surprise to you? >> it was a surprise. what was interesting about that was men were saying -- and women -- that if they found their partner reading their e-mail, they would break up with

them. so there is definitely -- like if you don't feel trustworthy and you catch your partner reading, there's big trouble. >> 51% of people who responded said yes, they had read their partner's e-mail, 49% of men said no. pretty much split down the middle. >> a quarter percent said they don't discuss earnings with their spouse. 33% of long term couples have separate accounts, 62% said they have equal access to their accounts. how important is it for couples to be open about their accounts, pepper? >> extremely important. it used to be everybody put their money together. now we're seeing this is one of those things that is voluntary. you may or may not. if you don't put it together, you actually have fewer arguments. >> this is going to spark conversation at dinner tables

we're back at 8:39. we all know that music has the power to bring people together in a lot of different ways. this morning, nbc's andrea mitchell has the story of extraordinary young musicians from a place you might not expect. andrea, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, matt. they come from a nation gripped by war and terrorism.

boys and girls rarely play together and music was banned for years by the taliban. now with help from the state department, the world bank and other supporters, these young afghan children are enjoying a rare moment of harmony. 13-year-old leila zhari has been waiting two years for this moment, the chance to perform on the world stage, while breaking another taliban taboo, girls and boys playing music together. which do you like better, the drums or the trumpet? which is more fun? >> the drums. >> reporter: the drums? she's one of 48 young musicians who attend the only music school in afghanistan. where music was strictly banned under taliban rule. many in the group are orphaned by war. some even lived on the streets. today they're nearly 7,000 miles from home, bringing traditional sound from their homeland.

the tambor, meksed with western harmonies they're also learning. organizers hope the young musicians can learn about america and america can learn about afghanistan. music is making a comeback. >> the future of afghanistan, where the children of the country are, the future and that hope is not dead. >> reporter: how does it feel to be playing your music here in america? he excels on an afghan instrument, the rubar, also met with the secretary of state, once a musician himself. >> when i was your age, i played in a rock band. >> reporter: their conductor, william harvey, juilliard trained violinist, has spent the last three years in kabul. >> i've taking masterpieces and

air coming in right around cleveland. you can see snow there. lot of heavy rain making its way through the del marva peninsula. here is what happens. these systems will transfer energy. the clipper will transfer its energy off to that system that's just along shore. as it does, the moisture comes up, the cold air comes in. as you can see, those lines -- those are lines of pressure. and as they tighten up, those are the winds, the strong winds that will come in and blow this snow and create blizzard-like conditions. here's what we've got. we're looking at winter storm warnings stretching from michigan all the way through upstate new york, interior pennsylvania and new england. but from new york city all the way up to east port, maine, we've got blizzard warnings. winds, sustained winds of 30 miles per hour or more. visibility of a quarter mile or less. here are the conditions we're talking about. generally upstate new york and

pennsylvania, anywhere from six to nine inches of snow. new york city, up to a foot of snow. from east port all the way down to providence, we're talking about two feet of snow and in and around boston, we could be looking at more than that. some areas to the west of boston could see -- it's not inconceivable that they could see three feet of snow. this is a dangerous storm. schools are closed in boston. they're open in new york city, but they've canceled all after-school activities. the airports here in boston will remain opened, but flights have been canceled. amtrak, canceling trains between new york and boston this afternoon. we are looking at a major winter storm, one that will probably set records up and down the northeast coast. willie? >> boy, three feet of snow in some areas. inkr incredible, al. we'll check back in, in a few minutes, with that local forecast. >> how do everything cheaper, we

now, we're hearing the shooting may have happened on a roof, but that has not been confirmed. no word yet on the person's condition who was shot or if the shooter is still active and on the run tp we are keeping our eye on that situation. meantime n the bay area, in san jose, investigators are trying to figure out how a woman fell to her death from a high floor of an apartment complex. police say the woman is 24 years old. officers on the scene early this morning telling us there's no indication of foul play or suicide. the woman fell just before 3:00 this morning from the city heights complex in downtown san jose on west st. james street. the coroner is now taking over this investigation. we'll check that forecast and also the roads on this friday after the break. ♪

it. >> new life with a little sanding job and painting and it's brand new again. >> yeah. >> that chair looks great. moving over here, i love this piece. you turned this vintage dresser into a wet bar. very cool. how did you do this? >> summertime, i love pulling out all my old dressers and i always do a wet bar in the backyard. dressers can be found your neighbor's castaway. go pick it up. salvation army, craigslist, all good places to find places like this. i always say if it's costing you more than $50, it's probably in too good of shape to convert it into something else. leave it alone. this is for the pieces that are just a mess and they're on death's door. this is the time to transform it into something. >> you painted it? >> i painted it. >> added this little -- >> these are simple things. you don't have to be skilled. little template like this. if you're not skilled with a jigsaw, simple things like a dollar turkey pan to put under

you're watching "today in the bay." >> 9:56. good morning. i'm marla tellez. today is decision day in the lawsuit filed by the family of man who drowned in the bay while police and firefighters batched from the shore. an attorney for the city of alameda said the situation was tragic but first responders did not have a legal duty to help. raymond zach waded into the water on memorial day 2011. police say they did not go after him because he was suicidal and possibly dangerous. firefighters say they were not certified for water rescues at the time. now they are certified. zach succumbed to hypothermia and eventually drowned. will the rain stick around for the weekend? let's gate check of the forecast with meteorologist christina

without the hassle. it's game time food. it's oscar mayer. you're watching "today in the bay." >> good morning to you. it's 10:26 now. i'm marla tellez. san jose national airport could soon become home to a new private airport for google executives. the $82 million project would include an executive terminal, hangars and ramp space to accommodate google's largest business jets. the proposed airport would bring in $3 million a year in rent and create hundreds of permanent jobs and up to 200 construction jobs. the san jose city council is expected to vote on this proposal in april. coming up after the break, we'll check the forecast and the roads.

three-quarters of the wealth in this country. >> wow. >> boomers spend on consumer goods annually -- my boomers, i'll key dine them people 50s and 60s. >> why do advertisers -- >> spend $2 trillion annually on consumer goods. >> so -- >> why do at thessers go for the young kids then? >> so one of the panels that is part of this program, one of the networks, researchers, is a giant in the field, points out that the sweet spot that we're all familiar with, the 18 to 49, and, by the way, it was created because of baby boomers. >> that used to be the sweet spot. >> it is a shrinking demographic. even the gen-xors are five years from starting to turn 50. 18 to 49 is a shrinking demographic, and he asked rhetorically why would you continue marketing to a demographic that you know is getting smaller? >> what is the answer? >> dying off. >> i think the answer is that people are re-evaluating who is

out there and -- >> who has the disposable mc. >> who is spending it. people who are 50 and 60 buy four times the tablets, for instance, and technology than 20 to 29-year-olds. >> that's one of the myth that is they're not technology-savvy. >> three-quarters of us are on the internet, and one-third are heavy users. we use it to shop. we use it to learn things, and we really use it to stay connected. this idea of connectedness and community. >> i think people get stuck in their ways of buying, and they keep buying the same -- >> that was our parents. we have far more in common with our kids and a closer affinity with our kids, who are sometimes still living with us -- >> some don't have the opportunities financially that we did. >> no, they don't. oftentimes -- someone called us not the sandwich generation, but the club sandwich. i pointed out that and we're the
